If you're wondering whether we can still be inspired by a new style of selvedge denim, the answer is a resounding yes. The IndigoXBrown is a true work of fabric art and one of the reasons we continue to fall in love over and over again with the world of rare denim.
To us, best selvedge in the world manages to combine the most beautiful ingredients into a complex and rich whole. Each element must standout, while also supporting a stunning overall look. Japan is the true master of this universe and when one of our favorite mills presented us with this new style it served as a vivid reminder.
It starts with the dye, both in the warp and weft. The warp gets an incredibly dark, inky indigo finish. The weft gets an ultra-rare gold-tinged brown dye unlike any other style we've run. What makes these two colors much more special is the use of slubby yarns. This irregularity serves to create separation in the top surface of the fabric, allowing the unique brown-weft be seen. It's not over the top, just enough to blend an incredibly saturated indigo appearance with a subtle antique brown glow. Next comes the big 16 ounce weight and heavy starch. This selvedge feels exactly the way we want a true vintage, rugged pair of raw denim to start - burly and stiff. Nothing other than a classic red ID would do to finish it off.
This is the type of collector denim you just truly look forward to owning and breaking in for years.
