Meet the Gustin Briefcase - in waxed canvas for the first time. A timeless look, functional design and the best materials come together to create a bag you can own for years. We’re particularly excited about the value we can offer you while using top notch, all-American construction.
The shape and basics of the perfect briefcase have been around for ages (Wikipedia claims since the 1850's). The classic briefcase is defined by a rectangular shape, ample storage, functional carry handles and a solid shoulder strap. The details are what separate a mediocre bag from a go-to bag that becomes an integral part of your daily life.
Our briefcase is made from heavy-duty, plain weave, water repellant waxed cotton canvas sourced in the USA and dyed to a rich olive color. Although similar in construction to our Trucker jacket fabric, this canvas is much heavier. Coming in at just under 20 oz, it's built to last and gives the briefcase a real sturdiness. Waxed canvas is beautiful from the start and ages gracefully. The waxed coating allows the fabric to age uniquely to you, and is water resistant. Each crease, each bend, each event in your life changes the texture and color. It scars and marks as the wax gets rubbed and displaced, becoming slightly lighter in those areas. It’s truly a thing of beauty.
Both side panels of our bag are double-lined with the twill, providing the bag with more structure and protecting the handle stitching. The interior of the bag is made of the same material. One side has a laptop sleeve that fits up to a 15” Macbook Pro. The other side has two passport sized slots, two pen slots and a zippered compartment. The whole interior uses leather binding - a nice little embellishment to show the quality of the bag. There's a double-lined top flap covering the zipper and leather opening, ensuring that even if you get caught in the rain, your contents won't get wet. On the exterior, one side has a full-length pocket, and the other has a vertically divided pocket.
The highest quality trims are just as important as great body material. For the leather we're using a 10 oz rich chocolate Latigo. It's substantial enough to withstand decades of commuting, yet aesthetically pleasing. This leather is used for the opening of the bag, the handles, the shoulder strap and the shoulder pad. Is it more durable than we need for a briefcase? Absolutely, but that’s why we love it. Now onto hardware. The zippers are YKK #10 brass made in Japan. They’re the best zippers made today, bar none. Our swivel snaps and d-rings are the beefiest solid brass we were able to find. They're overbuilt, but have amazing feel and function.
It took us almost two years of sampling with factories from Chicago to Portland to Dallas to find one that was able to produce the quality of bags we wanted. The factory we’re working with is a group of craftsmen in California who have been working with leather and canvas for nearly thirty years. They share our commitment to making items that are built to stand the test of time.
