Japan has created a truly unique selvedge experience by combining a series of seemingly contrasting construction elements. The result is special. It's one for the selvedge connoisseur who appreciates devotion to craft. The Japan 5x1 Loose Selvedge. As a side note, of the hundreds of selvedge styles I'm lucky enough to look and share with you, I'm adding this one to my collection.
Most of us don't think about the construction of the yarn, the weave of a twill, or the tension of a loom. Japan is a master of considering exactly these details and applying them creatively to build vintage raw selvedge as no other country can. Our latest example is here. It starts with the weave of the denim - a 5x1. Most mid to heavy selvedge uses a 3x1 construction. Lighter weight may even use a 2x1. This style pairs 5 warp yarns for each single weft. The result is a super wide, flat, indigo surface. You see small pinpricks of the white weft pocking through. It appears as though it should be a monster weight style, but in the first contrast we find, this one is a wearable 12 ounces. Next comes the application of low tension during the weaving process. The result is a loose, flowing hand, but in another contrast, a proper dose of starch lends a bit of crispness. The entire package is both great to look at and even better to wear. A monster look, but easy to love. A flowing feel, with the starch to remind you of the vintage roots. Of course, a classic red ID finishes it off.
