#597 The Beast Red Fire

Raw selvedge denim is an investment. It takes work. It's not about instant gratification and comfort. It's about a product that stands the test of time. You put in the time, it becomes unique to you. It ages and gets better with each wear. Very few, if any, fabrics do this. It's why we all fundamentally love raw selvedge denim. If you're going to invest, this is the type of denim to own. It starts with a big weight - 18 ounces. When you get up in this range you enter a different denim league. This is burly, old school denim. Densely woven and starchy, it takes on a leather-like feel. It will challenge you, but the durability is worth it. Next comes the yarn itself, another stand-out. The warp is a classic, dark indigo. Intensely slubby yarn is used, giving this denim a gorgeous texture and instantly putting it a cut above. The natural irregularity of the slubby yarn creates a bit more separation in the fabric, allowing greater show through of the weft yarn. If you're going to see that weft yarn more, you may as well make it truly special. This is the master stroke, as the weft yarn is a rusty, fiery red and 100% cotton. You definitely see a beautiful rusty glow, almost like a shadow, but it's never over the top. Even better, its prominence changes in different lighting. This is true investment selvedge.
