The Japan Ocean is the first Classic Button Down to get our updated fit and we couldn't ask for a more beautiful start. It manages to bring to life the colors of the ocean into a vintage inspired package.
To us, plaids that truly standout have to seamlessly combine colors we love into a harmonious package. If a plaid can do that using blues, we're obviously sold. Navy and sky blue form the base of this plaid. That tonal combination works perfectly together and the colors take on a bit of a vintage vibe. Adding brightness is crisp white that cuts across the blues in multiple forms from wide channels to fine lines. Yellow and reds round out the highlights in this complex plaid pattern. The whole palette works together. A 4 ounce weight makes for an airy and comfortable feel. This is a beautiful and classic shirt.
We spent the most time really making a true improvement to fit. The best way to put it is that our updated fit simply feels more organic. There is a much more sophisticated and natural shape to the entire body, from shoulders to chest to waist that better matches the natural curve of the human form. We’ve better aligned shoulder and chest widths and given the bottom hem only a subtle curve, striking an improved balance between tucking and untucking ability. The improved fit is something you notice the instant you put this new shirt on. It just flows with the body better and feels better on. We also believe this fit is more universal. It’s taking the place of slim and classic fits . . . this is now our best fit.
We also took this opportunity to make two key upgrades to the details while preserving the classic style we all love. The first is button placement on the placket. Most people are wearing these shirts without ties and now opening that top button leaves the ideal shape. Second is a gently rounded chest pocket shape to provide a softer, more organic look. Of course, we’ve kept all the intricate construction details from the single needle work to locker loop to box pleat.
Buttons downs that are made in the USA using our quality of material and construction are typically priced at $175 to $300. The Gustin model, with your support, lets us do much better.

What Customers Are Saying
"So grateful for this brand! Love the fit, finish, and quality of everything I've ever bought from here. Moreover, the pricing enables people like me to have access to quality goods which are often outside of the reach of the most working people."

"I really love Gustin. I just don't think I'd choose another brand at any price point. And I love watching for new products/return of old favs. But a very important part of the experience is the great customer service."
-Keith P. | Verified Buyer
"This salt & pepper plaid shirt is **** awesome. Fit, feel, and look are amazing! Best looking shirt I own. My wife gave me “the eye” when I walked into the kitchen wearing it. Thanks for making it!"
